WHO you wear is as important as what you wear
“WHO you wear is as important as what you wear.” – taken from Evana Maggiore’s latest newsletter. Evana is the founder of Fashion Feng Shui International, and a great teacher, mentor and friend who always has something wise to say.
I recently lost a dear friend to cancer. At his memorial service (which Tom had participated in planning before his untimely death), the “Master of Ceremonies,” who was one of his best friends, stepped up to the podium wearing Tom’s beloved, black leather sports jacket.
“I was never very fond of this jacket,” he began, “but Tom not only insisted that I wear it today, he bequeathed it to me — for exactly that reason. “It’ll grow on you,” he had sweet-talked me as I resisted his unwanted gift. “Plus, you’ll have to think of me every time you wear it.”
All I could envision was Tom grinning like a Cheshire Cat because he had found a way to continue their ongoing friendly ribbing from the “other side.”
What the MC may not have realized is that Tom had bestowed a very special gift on him. By wearing a garment that Tom had held so dear, his best friend was actually absorbing all the love that Tom had poured into it over the years.
Just as Feng Shui teaches that a house can also hold thought and feeling energies from the people who lived there or the people who built it, a garment can do the same. This is called predecessor chi, or predecessor energies.
In the MC’s case, the garment in question was not only filled with positive energy, it represented a now lost friend, whose love of life and generous spirit lives on in its energetic imprint.
When my father died, I rushed home to find solace in the tweed cap that he had worn to disguise his chemotherapy ravaged hair. It still smelled of him and I could conjure his soothing presence just by running my hands over its coarse fabric.
Now that consignment clothing shops are such a big trend, it’s important to know that pre-owned clothes come with the previous owner’s energy. Of course, you have no way of knowing whether the energy imprint is positive or negative. So, make it a habit to clear any consignment purchases or hand-me-downs before you wear them.
A simple way to do so is to allow the garment to “air out” by hanging it, if possible, outside for a few hours – preferably overnight. If weather or lifestyle conditions do not allow, hang it in a steamy bathroom – adding some essential oils to the steam would be wonderful.
Either way you do it, be sure to set an intention that the previous owner’s energy will be released from the garment. Give it permission to move on. When it feels right, wear it in good health!
